Welcome to a momentous occasion where Mahibere Hiwot for Social Development (MSD) has proudly inaugurated a temporary shelter for migrant children in the heart of Akaki Kality Sub-City, Woreda 03, Addis Ababa.
This remarkable initiative signifies a significant milestone in MSD’s ongoing dedication to supporting vulnerable children. The shelter, spanning an impressive 1,200 square meters, has been meticulously designed and fully equipped to provide a safe haven for up to 50 children at a time. Its comprehensive services include :
- safe housing and shelter,
- essential advice and counseling services,
- as well as crucial family tracing and reunification support.
The inauguration ceremony was graced by esteemed key stakeholders and partners, with the presence of luminaries such as Mr. Tilaye Gizachew, the Founder and Executive Director of MSD; the Executive Director of Save the Children; representatives from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), GIZ, PAD; and officials from the local government.
This significant achievement is a testament to the robust collaboration between MSD, Save the Children, and local authorities, showcasing our steadfast commitment to upholding the dignity, safety, and well-being of every child.
The establishment of this shelter has been made possible through the generous support of esteemed partners including Save the Children International (SCI), Froden Foundation, GIZ, Akaki Kality Sub-City Woreda 03 Administration, and the Addis Ababa Bureau of Finance. It is an integral part of the overarching “East African Migration Route Project,” a transformative four-year initiative funded by the Swiss Development Cooperation and implemented in partnership with SCI. Currently, the project is actively underway in both the Metema area of the Amhara Region and Addis Ababa.
This new shelter stands as a powerful symbol of MSD’s core mission: to ensure that no child is left behind and to persist in our tireless efforts to serve and safeguard vulnerable children within our community. Let us continue to work hand in hand towards a brighter future for all children in need.
