Mahibere Hiwot for Social Development (MSD) was established in October 1999 by few volunteer youth who were concerned and hence aspired to contribute their part in the national effort to combat the spread of the HIV epidemic. It is this strong motive of the youth accompanied by their high levels of commitment that enabled MSD to register as a formal association in March 2002 by the Gondar Administration Justice Department. Over the course of time MSD has primarily been involved in HIV prevention, care & support and Reproductive Health programs.
In July 2004, two years after its establishment as a formal association, MSD has been registered as a local NGO by the Ministry of Justice. Some years later in 2009, MSD was re-registered by the Civil Society Agency as an Ethiopian Resident Charity by the name ‘Mahiberehiwot Reproductive Health and Social Development Organization’.
Mahibere Hiwot for Social Development is functioning as a not–for–profit, non–partisan local Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) committed to deliver a lasting difference to the lives of people in need, in Ethiopia. MSD has the mandate to operate nationally where it is currently operating in Addis Ababa and 7 regional states – Amhara, Benishangul Sidama , Oromia , SNNPR , Sidama and Tigray. MSD’s headquarters located is located in Addis Ababa since June, 2014.
With more than two decades of experience, MSD is operating on Health( HIV prevention, care & support OVC Care & Support, youth sexual reproductive health, family planning) , migration, trafficking, child protection ,Good governance & Human right and environmental protection and climate change Also Humanitarian response and emergency.
MSD serves its community with full commitment. MSD focuses to address the problems of hard to reach groups of the community such as early married rural girls, People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA), in and out of school youth, commercial sex workers & their clients, waitresses, long distance truck drivers, Adolescents, youth, women, widows and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). At community level, the organization works with community members and community based social service providing institutions, schools, health centers, government sector offices and youth centers.
To date, MSD has directly served more than 6.3 million beneficiaries with an annual budget burning rate of ETB 120,000,000 ETB. MSD currently have 268 permanent employees.
Organizational Philosophy
MSD believes in youth as agents of change and childhood as a gateway. Working towards addressing socio-economic constraints for Youths and Children can unleash their potential to be powerful forces to ignite change and drive sustainable development. We work in collaboration with government stakeholders, donors, national and international development organizations, as well as with local communities, in order to optimally contribute to youth and child development activities.
