MSD and UNICEF Launch Critical Emergency Child Protection Initiative in Amhara Region
Bahir Dar, Ethiopia – Mahibere Hiwot for Social Development (MSD), in collaboration with UNICEF and the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, has launched the Crisis-Affected Children Protection Project on Decenber 22, 2024. This initiative aims to safeguard 3,000 vulnerable children in North Gojjam and Awi Zones from violence, exploitation, neglect, and harmful practices.
Event Highlights
The event began with a welcoming address by Mr. Tilaye Gizachew, Founder and Executive Director of MSD, who emphasized MSD’s commitment to child protection and the importance of collaboration. Mr. Ayenew from UNICEF delivered a keynote address outlining the project’s strategic rationale, focusing on unaccompanied and separated children, children with disabilities, and other marginalized groups. Wro Zena Getachew, Vice Head of the Amhara Region Bureau of Women and Social Affairs, stressed the bureau’s dedication to children’s rights and urged active stakeholder engagement.

Stakeholder Engagement
The event saw participation from various stakeholders, including representatives from zonal and woreda levels, the Bureau of Women and Social Affairs, and the Bureau of Disaster Prevention and Preparedness. Discussions led to a collective commitment to strengthen local child protection mechanisms.
Project Scope and Objectives
Supported by a budget of $396,300.34, with $358,708.03 from UNICEF and $37,592.31 from MSD, the project aims to provide:
- Family Tracing and Reunification (FTR) and alternative care for unaccompanied and separated children.
- Mental Health and Psychosocial Support for children and their caregivers.
- Survivor Assistance for children affected by landmines and explosive weapons.
- Accessible Reporting Channels for addressing sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA).

The event concluded with remarks from Wro Burtukan Sisay, Head of the Amhara Regional Bureau of Women and Social Affairs, emphasizing the need for sustained collaboration among partners.
